Feast of Fools at the Fringe

I’m so excited that from August the 1st – 18th I’ll be performing Feast of Fools  at The Scottish Storytelling Centre as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Here’s a bit about the event:

Ever poured gravy into your hat? Eaten next to a Sultan? Had a dinner party with the devil? Well now’s your chance. The Feast of Fools will make this happen and more in one of the most unusual feeds you’ll ever have. Join storyteller Daniel Serridge at his dinner table of foolishness as he regales you with tales of disgusting banquets, salubrious suppers and measly meals. Prepare to get wined, dined and unrefined. Disclaimer: There will be no food served at this event and as a consequence you’ll leave starving or never wanting to eat again.

The show as been named as one of TheEdinburghFringe.com’s top ten must see childrens shows of this years fringe, you can see the full list here.

Although its advertised as a children’s show, please don’t think you can’t turn up as an adult on your own. There’ll be plenty in it for you too!

Brave the Elements

At the end of January I designed and delivered one of the most exciting primary school projects that I have had the fortune to lead. Brave the Elements was a ten day storytelling, visual art, outdoor learning, pupil-led play and literacy attainment raising programme at Cardonald Primary School. We faced all sorts if weather whilst perched on top of a surprise hill on the south side of Glasgow. Battered by rain, hail, snow, sleet, wind and the a very small slice of sunshine, every pupil in the school explored the four classical elements; Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Weaving mythology from Greek, Norse and Native American culture we tried to sore like Icarus, burn like Surtr, control the waves like Poseidon and build the world on a turtles back. Here’s some photos to prove we truly did Brave the Elements.

Wild Words of Welcome

And so it begins. My journey into the world of self-employment and living the life of a freelance storyteller. I don’t know where to begin. Once upon a time? It was the best of times? Call me Ishmael?

No. I’m not Ishmael, I’m Dan so it’s probably best to start with something that sums me up. Something that can reflect what I’m searching for and what my storytelling is trying to achieve.

On a recent trip to Glenelg, tucked behind Skye on the West Coast of Scotland, I discovered a poem. A poem told from the point of view of looking across to the small Isle of Soay from the top of Bla Bheinn (Blaven). The poem struck a chord for all its visual delights. So I recorded it and here it is. 

My work seeks the stories and metaphors that lurk within the landscape and this new direction I’m taking will hopefully uncover more hidden poetic gems like this. Follow me on twitter where I’ll share a poetic #wildwednesday every week.
